Creating and configuring a template

Requires the Admin role.

Where to create it​

Go to Settings → Asset Templates. Here you'll find the list of all templates in your Space, with the ability to create a new one, edit it, or delete it.

Steps​

  1. Fill in the template Information:
    • Name (required), e.g. "Industrial fridge";
    • Description (optional);
    • Image URL (optional), for the product preview.
  2. Configure IoT connectivity: choose Trackle, MQTT or HTTP and complete the protocol settings (credentials, offline timeout, MQTT profile, etc.). Details in IoT connectivity.
  3. Configure Metadata: the schema of static asset fields (serial number and other fields such as site, notes, dates). Details in Metadata.
  4. Configure telemetry variables (the Telemetry tab): key, label, type, unit, history, show-in-list, writable, optional value mapping and, for MQTT Generic/Teltonika, the field write template. Or leave fields empty and enable automatic detection. Details in Telemetry variables.
  5. Optional: enable automatic field detection if you want Spaces to propose unknown keys sent by the device.
  6. Save the template.

:::tip Distinct sections On the template page you will find separate sections:

  • Information = name, description and image of the product type;
  • IoT connectivity = protocol and connection settings;
  • Metadata = static information for every asset;
  • Telemetry = schema of the fields (variables) Spaces reads or writes from the device. :::

After creation you can always come back to the template to:

  • update name, description and image;
  • edit IoT connectivity;
  • add or edit metadata and telemetry variables;
  • create alarm rules (see Alarm rules);
  • create template dashboards and set which one is the home dashboard (see Dashboard).

Editing an existing template​

Changes to a template (new metadata, new telemetry variables, new alarm rules, new dashboards) apply to all assets using it. You can also make these same changes more quickly from an asset's detail page: see Creating dashboards and rules from the asset's detail page.

Deleting a template​

Only delete a template if it has no connected assets, or carefully evaluate the impact first: deletion also removes its associated alarm rules and dashboards.
